The following is the text of a letter presented to Phil Iddison in recognition of his years of contributions to the Emirates Natural History Group. The presentation took place at the Al Ain chapter's Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 26 November 2002.
26 November 2002
The Committee and membership of the Al Ain chapter is pleased to present Phil with a lifetime membership in the Emirates Natural History Group in recognition of his unselfish contributions.
Phil has spent many years in the Gulf, concluding his time in the region with an extended stay in Al Ain where he continued his study and fascination with native culture, especially food. His unique research has been shared with individuals around the world. On several occasions in recent years, Phil attended seminars in the UK to present papers on everything from Bedouin dietary habits to the incredible range of UAE milk byproducts. His publications on the Al Ain Oasis, the Al Ain fish souq and other topics are mainstays in the Group's library.
Phil has also been generous with his time, leading others on tours of the Al Ain souq, explaining to the uninitiated all the curious and wonderful items available. He also gave up weekends to lead tours of the refurbished oases in the city. His collection of photographs - watchtowers, fish, plants, and field trips - is certainly the most extensive of any ENHG member. Finally, he has demonstrated leadership as a member of the Al Ain Committee and Special Interest Group coordinator.
On behalf of countless members who have and will continue to benefit from your generosity, thank you, Phil.
